I saw on facebook that Caryn Ashdene was challenging people to grab this free shirt and take a photo and post it, to show solidarity for the horrible situation that occurred in Paris the other day at the Charlie Hebdo offices. As someone who lived through the terrorist attacks on 9/11 in my hometown of NYC, this is something that hits very close to home.
No one should make you feel unsafe in your own home. In most Western countries, this is something that is a foreign concept to us. How could one not feel safe in their own country. Yet it is a reality that millions of people live with every single second of every single day.
Going to work at a magazine in Paris or at a mall in Kenya or at a government office building in Oklahoma City or running a marathon in Boston or going to school in Gaza or taking a bus in Jerusalem should not be a matter of life or death.
